The Zingaro Nature Reserve
The Zingaro Nature Reserve was founded in 1981, and it is first nature reserve founded in Sicily by the Sicily government.
It covers 1,600 hectares and encompasses a stretch of beautiful coastline from Castellammare del Golfo to San Vito Lo Capo, with small coves and picturesque cliffs of an increasingly clear, unpolluted sea of iridescent shades.
The existence of very different ecological niches allows an exceptional faunal diversity.
In the Reserve, in fact, over 40 species of nesting birds such as the peregrine falcon, kestrel, buzzard, raven, the seagull, the black kite, the western jackdaws, the sparrow, the eagle...
Among the mammals are the wild rabbit, porcupine, fox and various kinds of rodents.
The flora is also of admirable beauty with rare and endemic plants; flowers, beautiful and little known, which grow wild: wild carnations; various types of daisies, wallflower; among the succulent plants we find different types of cactus, prickly pears and agaves.
The reserve takes part of the municipalities of San Vito Lo Capo and Castellammare del Golfo and is managed by the “Azienda Foreste Demaniali” (a forestry agency), it can be visited only on foot and is very well organized in terms of fruition; in it, in fact, there are prepared trails with precise directions, shelters, wells, water points, picnic areas, museums, parking.
To be mentioned are the natural historical museum of the Reserve, the Museum of peasant life and the Museum of the Maritime activities.
