It seems to have been built in the fifth century BC on a prior date to the help request from Segesta to Athens, and in Carthage. Some people argue that it is an unfinished work, and others claim to be a peristyle for some outdoors worship, by the Elymians.

Temple and theater are the most famous monuments, but are not the only, in the course of time other remarkable but not less important finds came to light, such as the so-called Sanctuary of Contrada Mango.

This sizable building (83.40 x 47.80 meters) is located on Mount Barbaro slopes, at the foot of the Acropolis in the southeast and it sates back to the VI or V century B.C.

Following recent excavations, using sophisticated aerial photography techniques, Arab-Byzantine-era buildings were founded near the Thatre, including a castle and a mosque, some different surrounding walls, some doors of the City and a road system.
